Clarisonic Mia for pre-teens?

I got my daughter a Clarisonic Mia for Christmas. She is 11, almost 12, and just starting to get blemishes. Her skin is very sensitive and really still more of a child’s skin than a teenager’s. No clogged pores, or black heads, or bumps of any sort – just occasional (yet distressing) pimples.

I was a little unsure about using a sonic system designed for adult skin, but, at the same time, I wanted her to get off to a good start with her skincare, so we gave it a try.

She loved the feel and started using it everyday. This was way too much for her, and her skin became irritated after three days. So we slowed her down to once a week for 1 minute only, and this worked really well. No irritation and nice clear skin. She forgot one week and did 2 minutes in one session to ‘catch up’ and the irritation came back. Lesson learned!

She doesn’t use the hydrating cleanser. Instead she has stuck with her ‘baby’ bar soap for ultra sensitive skin. She just works up a lather in her palm, pats it on her face and then uses the Clarisonic for 1 minute (or until it turns off by itself). This is working really well for her – her skin is clear and bright!

We started her on the delicate brush head, but moved her to the sensitive one because it felt a little softer.

I’m also teaching her how her diet affects her skin – the inside out approach – which I believe is really important. There is some good info at How2GetHealthy.com on this.

I’m sure this regiment will change as she grows older, but for now it works perfectly and she enjoys using her Mia. She feels very grown up!

8 Tips For Using Your Clarisonic

Here are some useful tips for using your Clarisonic Facial Cleansing System

1) Keep your brushes very clean and replace them regularly about every 3 to 4 months depending on how often you use them.

2) Choose the right brush for your skin type. Gentler is usually better, so go for one that feels good and doesn’t irritate your skin. You may have to try a few out to find the one you like best. But don’t worry, just keep reading, there are plenty of other uses for the brushes you prefer not to use on you face.

3) Don’t over do it! This depends a lot on your skin type. Some people can use theirs every day twice a day as Clarisonic recommends. However, many people get the best result if they use it just a few times per week. Again, you are smart to experiment with this until you find the best regiment for you. Everyone is a little different, so you need to work out what works best for you.

4) When you are starting out you may need to use it more often. If your pores are very clogged up (like mine were!) you may need to use your brush more intensively for the first 2 to 3 months. This is not uncommon. You may get break outs during this time as your pores clear. But persevere! This is temporary and as your pores clean out, the break outs will stop and you skin will start looking great.

5) If you have acne, you will need to be very careful not to use the brushes too much as this could irritate. Acne sufferers do, however, get great results with Clarisonic when they are careful not to over use it.

6) You can use any cleanser you want with your Clarisonic. Their own hydrating cleanser is very good, but if you have a brand that you love, then go ahead and use it. I like to use Dr Hauschka products. Even though Hauschka recommends not exfoliating, I get beautiful results when I use their products and exfoliate with my Clarisonic 3 times per week. It took me a while to figure all this out and this is why you need to experiment a bit to find the right products and schedule for your skin.

7) Take your brush in the shower with you and use it on other parts of your body. I use my older brush heads on my body and save my new ones for my face. This saves me money. I love to use them on my hands and forearms, and, of course my decollete. I definitely keep an extra old brush around for my feet! And boy does it tickle!

8) Keep your Clarisonic very clean. You can use any non-oil based cleanser. I always clean mine with a little bit of shower gel when I’m in the shower. That saves me time and I always know I’ll have a clean brush.

How To Use a Clarisonic

This post is based on my own experience of using a Clarisonic Facial Cleansing System. I recently bought a Clarisonic Mia – the most popular of the Clarisonics – so I thought I should share my experience of how to use a Clarisonic.

I really love the Clarisonic Mia Gray. This is the model I have. It is a simple one button, one speed brush that is compact in size. It doesn’t have the charging cradle like the Pro, Classic and Plus models, but rather a simple charger that sort of snaps on and off very easily. This makes the Mia very portable and easy to use.

The brush can be removed by twisting it off, and it is much easier to twist off if you keep the little protective cap on it. I’m sharing the Mia with my daughter and we each have our own brush to so we are constantly changing them.

The Results I’m Getting

I have been using it for only two and half weeks and am seeing a real improvement in my skin. I’ve always had a difficult T-Zone – redness, enlarged pores, blackheads and breakouts. The Clarisonic is really getting this area very clean. Pores are slowly ‘closing up’ (that’s the best way I can describe it). However, a few pores that are stretched out remain the same. The redness is residing and a few bumps between my eyebrows (sort of deep pimples) where I have to pluck are nearly gone. Blackheads are also nearly gone.

Overall my skin is looking great already and I’m looking forward to it getting even better. Most Amazon reviewers state that it takes a couple of months for your skin to get the best results. Many people say that you can get breakouts at the start, but this was not the case for me.

How Often Should I Use My Clarisonic?

This was my biggest question when I first started. The company says once or twice a day for 1 minute, but this was too much for both me and my daughter. I’m currently using it every other day and plan to reduce this to 2 to 3 times per week once I feel that my skin is really cleared out.

My daughter is a pre-teen and she can only use it once a week. Any more causes her irritation.

It is tempting to use the brushes longer than needed because the sonic action feels really good. But beware, over-use causes irritation and perhaps even the break outs that some people experience when using it for the first time. If I were to start again, I would start slow and build up.

Which Brush Should I Use?

This was my second biggest question. The Mia comes with a sensitive brush and I bought an additional delicate brush for my daughter’s more delicate skin. I tried both and found the sensitive was gentler than the delicate so we switched so that my daughter has the most gentle brush. I think this is something you need to try for yourself. If a brush is too much for your face you can always use it on other body areas. I’m going to keep experimenting with the brushes.

Which Cleanser Should I use?

I’m using the cleanser sample that it came with and it works well. I do plan to try others and am thinking of finding a way to combine it with Dr. Hauschka products which I really love because they don’t contain any chemicals and they smell so wonderful!

My Biggest Surprise!

I really love the results I’m getting on my face with only two and a half weeks of use and my biggest surprise is how good it works on my hands! I take it the shower with me once a week and do hands, forearms, decollete and neck. It makes my skin feel really smooth and nice!

Do I have to use Clarisonic’s cleansers, or can I use the cleanser I have used for years and that I know works best for my skin? The Pro is the top of the line model with all the bells and whistles that the professionals use. They quote the prices as $195 or $225 with the body kit, but they won’t sell it on their site! Luckily, you can get it on Amazon for as little as $167. That’s less than you would pay for the more basic Classic at Clarisonic.com!
